Extensions as Study Tools: Stayfocusd

Over the last several days, I have tried using the Stayfocusd Chrome extension while studying to avoid distraction. The extension allows a user to set a limit for the amount of time they can spend on a distracting website per day, allowing them to concentrate while working.

I tested the extension by blocking Buzzfeed, Tumblr, and the New York Times and Huffington Post. I haven't previously had issues getting distracted from studying on these sites because I normally don't have enough time to start browsing (and consequently procrastinate other work), but it was a relief to have the limit there in case I were to decide to take just a moment to browse the news and then lose track of time. I've tried another site-blocking app, called SelfControl, which worked until my computer mysteriously crashed (very possibly having to do with the app.)

I had a positive experience with the Stayfocusd extension itself- it was easy to navigate, and it only took a few seconds to enter the sites I wished to limit. When I tried using a site for the duration of the time limit, it frequently reminded me how much time I had left. In the future, I will definitely use this extension, as it is a nice way to ensure that I say on track with homework and it is easy and quick to set up.
